Name Origin: Minnesota
The name Minneapolis comes from the Lakota word "minne" which means “water,” and the Greek word "polis" which means “city.” The Water City or City of Lakes takes time to celebrate all things water every year during the third week of July. This tradition began in 1940 and includes a much-loved parade and one of the largest fireworks displays in the USA.
