The capitol is a beautiful landmark Minnesotans are quite proud of. The first physical form of the US Government in the Minnesota Territory was Fort Snelling, which was completed in 1825 at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. The Territory held its first legislature in a log hotel in 1849 in St Paul, which remained the capital from then on, growing right alongside Minneapolis to create the Twin Cities. The current capital building is a thing of beauty and presently boasts the second largest self-supported marble dome in the world, with the largest being St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
